Software Ads

Most ad services now are geared toward either web or mobile apps. If you're doing a desktop app, with probably a pretty limited number of installs, you're probably not going to find much.

In my mind it comes down to the value of your application. Yes, it takes money to develop apps. And yes, for someone doing that on their own it can be expensive. But if your application warrants the price tag, people will pay for it. If it doesn't, well..they'll let you know that too. Adding ads will more likely drive potential customers away from your product.

I am of the opinion that if you wish to make money in application development, it's best to sell support than the application itself.

  • 2 weeks later...

I find it odd that people in general reject in app advertising on desktop software. But the same people are perfectly okay with in app advertising on mobile devices where screen real estate is extremely limited and where fumbled fingers inadvertently click on ads. It's annoying but I don't hate it. Just have to be more careful with your fat fingers. Mouse clicking is so much more accurate. No accidental clicks. I actually kind of like ad's because they help me to find out about new products and services that I would not normally just find.. It's like finding something cool by accident. Where is it written that programmers must absolutely work for free?

I think it's unfair to compare the two. Desktop apps have different usage compared to mobile.

I agree with @guinness, Ads are annoying in desktop apps... You might want to try including crapware in your software's installer instead of software ads, TD :P

I simply refuse to use ad-powered apps in desktop, tablet or smartphone context. It's that simple. OTOH I'm happy to buy software when I find it of significant use for me.

Unfair how? I don't understand.. The screen on a mobile is so much smaller than a desktop. I find ads on my mobile to be somewhat annoying. Sometimes I will see an ad that looks interesting, but it's so tiny I can barely see it. By comparison, we see desktop ads all the time. This forum has ads but we never think about it, and no one complains. There are ads on just about every website we visit. It may not be in your desktop software per se.. But it's still being displayed on your desktop isn't it?

The forum isn't a desktop application, it's a web-like application, which again is unfair to compare as they no only have different uses, but a completely different user base. The thing is the apps I use on my mobile are totally different to those i use on my desktop (laptop). Similarly the things I do on my desktop are again totally different. I spend more time on my laptop doing productive things than on my mobile, so having mobile apps aren't as obtrusive as they would be if they were in desktop applications. As I use the laptop for productive work and not fun*.

I am not a gamer and only use it for programming and research purposes.

The forum may not be a desktop application, but your browser sure is. Either way, those ads are still appearing on your desktop/laptop screen one way or another. I think people just have a bias against desktop application advertising. I see it as a way to pay for an effort. Which bring me back to my point. Where is it written that programmers must work for free. Maybe a better question is, why are so many of use willing to work for free?

I think I can answer that question. We do what we do because we love what we do right? For many of of, this is all we want to do.. Problem is, much as we love to do it and generous as we definitely are.. We still have to eat and pay bills like everyone else. Most people won't pay for software, that's a fact. Either they get it free, or the pirate it. Even honest people who pay for software won't but everything out there. You could spend your entire paycheck every week paying for all the software you would love to have. It's just not practical to buy everything you want because there is so much out there.

So how do you solve the problem of getting paid to do what you love? In app advertising may not be a perfect solution, but I think it strikes a good balance. Everything in life is a compromise.
