how to access characters of a string?

hi, im trying to access indivudual characters of a string.. in python i would simply do

string = "hello"

for i in string:

    print(i)

however in autoit I have tried doing this...

$string = "hello"

for $I=0 to stringlen($string)-1 step 1

    consolewrite($string[$I])

next

.... and it simply is incorrect I was wondering if someone knew the correct way of doing this?

AutoIt doesn't regard a string as an array of characters. Lookup String* functions, especially StringSplit.

Thanks for the reply! and hmm yes I had looked at that function but I struggle to understand how it can be implemented because I find the parameters confusing, would you be able to show me please?

Trying the example coming along the function in the help would be a good start.

StringSplit ( "string", "delimiters" [, flag = 0] )

I looked but I really just dont understand it, I think the flag value I want to use is 0 but how would I make it return each characters sequentially? "delimiters" looks like it searches for the place where a string is in the string and "string" is the string to look in?

Just read the helpfile at the bottom. Remarks.

If you use an empty string "" for the delimiters, each character will be returned as an element.

Edit: J1 was quicker.
