Outlook.com mail app?

Few years ago i used to use a mail app called You've Got Mail

It was a taskbar program that notified you when you had mail via a simple popup and with one click opened your mail account

With the advent of webmail more than POP/SMTP it declined but i loved using it because unlike the rest of the world im not always online(with a browser open etc)

So for me i could still receive notifications but i didn't need a browser open.

 

Anyway the question is how difficult is it to open a webmail account using code, as im wondering if i have the talent to write something like this?

Or maybe someone knows of a modern version, ive searched all over the web but the focus seems to be browser addons not taskbar

any thoughts?

Not hard at all. They have a RESTful API (https://dev.outlook.com/RestGettingStarted/Overview)which you can use to connect to a mail account (see Outlook Mail REST API reference). I would use trancexx's WinHTTP to connect to the API or maybe look at using .NET to create the application, as they have a tutorial on how to achieve this.

Edit: Also you will need to parse JSON, so look in the examples section for parsing JSON (JavaScript Object Notation - popularised by Douglas Crockford)

I think your definition of not hard and mine are very different

I shall only be using AutoIt, i dont know any other languages

Well you can create this in AutoIt with maybe 100 lines or so using the UDFs I mentioned. Unless you were hoping for some native AutoIt functions? Maybe this is you chance to move out of your comfort zone.

that is pretty much writing an email client software. i wouldn't go there, as it is too big a bite to swallow. anyways there are plenty of excellent programs for that, see last link hereunder.

I dont need a mail software just something to tell me in the taskbar when a mail has arrived, checks every few mins etc and then it takes me to my outlook.com to read it.

Thanks for the options , i think ive looked at most of the them but ill double check and do some reading
