More Win10 issues

Another problem that's been really twisting my knickers is that I am an admin on my machine, UAC slider is all the way down, yet programs don't automatically run with elevated privileges.

The NVidia GeForce experience is supposed to start with windows and notifies you of game settings updates for games you have, driver updates, GeForce experience updates, etc. Which normally was working as it should, or so I thought. It was starting with windows and would notify me of things and such, but would really cause problems if I tried to run through the update process for either my vid cards or the GFE itself, why? because it didn't have the rights to install the stuff. So it would freeze up and eventually I'd have to reboot the pc to get it running again.

I went into all the GFE exe's and set the compatibility mode to run as admin, but now the dang program won't start with windows. Some of it's processes do, but not the full thing. Arg!

  • Administrators

I really wouldn't disable UAC. It's not just an admin/nag thing it also turns off file and registry virtualization which some older apps might be relying on. Under Windows 10 it also prevents universal/modern apps from running. On Windows 8 this wasn't a problem because the modern apps were the toy versions. But in Win 10 there are loads of them that are now modern apps. Calc, paint, etc. Half of them won't run with UAC off.

I'd also strongly recommend that you enable UAC on any development machine. It saves getting caught out when you write scripts/code and they work fine until you test them on a default UAC-enabled machine.

I heard that changing the EnableLUA (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System) policy in the registry was the only way to completely disable UAC on Win8+ - apparently the slider doesn't completely do it. But I've not explored that because I have UAC enabled on all my workstations.

All that said, I recall you had loads of unusual win10 problems in another topic and it could just be a bad upgrade. I've got a Nividia enabled win10 games machine and that updates the drivers/profiles quite happily with none of the startup problems you mention.

Yeah, the slider didn't completely shut off UAC, it just stopped prompting me for elevation so if a program needs elevated, then it just hangs waiting for a response that can never happen because the box isn't there.

You can also go into the security control panel I believe and disable one of the services that will shut off UAC and I had done that which fixed my NVidia issue, but as you said, Windows complained that it needed UAC for it's apps, so I re-enabled it but left notifications off.

I just found it much easier on myself if I didn't have to worry about what needed elevated privileges and what didn't. The last fresh re-install of my system was about 5 years ago, and that was just to make a system image with nothing but my games and favorite programs already installed. And I've not had any issues until now >:(

  • 4 weeks later...

All that said, I recall you had loads of unusual win10 problems in another topic and it could just be a bad upgrade. I've got a Nividia enabled win10 games machine and that updates the drivers/profiles quite happily with none of the startup problems you mention.

I'm really getting irritated with Win10. Today my 3D program is constantly crashing, OS bogs down easy, and really it's just a general PITA.

If it weren't for projects I'm in the middle of, I'd simply just wipe and go back to 7.

Currently I'm running sfc command but I'm only winging it here.

In earlier editions of windows I always had a disc with repair options and if that failed, then it was a reinstall of the OS.

In this case, I don't have an install disk and if my upgrade was bad, then my system image is bad as well (plus I don't want to restore the system image and lose all my work.)

While looking up system repair options, I see that along side the sfc, windows 10 also has Deployment Image & Servicing Management tool so I will try that next. If those don't work, then I'm not sure what I can do short of copying my user folder (which has given issues in the past of being able to be opened again after a new install) and starting from scratch.

So I got the SFC and the DISM run and the computer seems to be running a bit better now. Still considering trying the refresh option that I just found but I'll still want to find a way to backup (and still have access to) my user folders before I do since windows decides what's important and what's not...

So I'm about decided to try and refresh my OS, but I do have a question

I'm sure refresh will use the Windows 10 files already downloaded, so when you say I may have had a bad upgrade, would that mean those downloaded files are bad and a refresh will just reinstall those bad files?

I wonder since this was a free upgrade, will it ask for a serial key for the refresh?

Since I guess refresh only just came out with Win8 and I only had Win7 before, I'm unfamiliar with refresh.

So I tried the Refresh option but it just gave me some generic error of "sorry, we couldn't refresh"

so I tried the booting to command prompt and renaming system and software as I read that fixes the issue, but when I ran the "ren software software.001"

it told me it was in use and couldn't. After googling that, the only reply I could find said that the whole OS needs reinstalled fresh (yay...) However, I don't have any bootable win10 media or a product key to install it >:(  My win7 install was un upgrade from xp and it's product key is in an email account I no longer have access to (I got it on huge discount through school so the product key was emailed to my school account)

I used some software (can't remember the name off-hand) to get product keys from my system, but there's no telling if it actually gave me a good key and of course MS didn't send out any product keys with their free Win10 upgrades. What a fiasco, I should have just stuck with 7.

*edit*

Ok, I re-downloaded the media toolkit for Win10 to create an iso but I'm wondering if I choose to upgrade the system if that would work.

jellybean keyfinder

https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

As for your other woes without the 7 upgrade key your stuck really , upgrade back to 7/10 would work but you need the key.

When you upgrade to 10 it changes the reference of the 7 key and stores the change at microsoft but you have no access to that key

You could grab your 10 key and try a fresh install with that but im pretty sure it counts as an upgrade key you could test that on a spare H/D i guess

Thank you for the reply and the link :)

I had my Win7 key written down, but that was years ago and I'm pretty sure I don't have that piece of paper anymore. I also used to have instructions (directly from MS) on how to install 7 on a formatted drive, use my upgrade key, then activate windows even though it was only an upgrade and not a stand-alone key.

Anyways, looks like my only option at this point is to hope I can find my keys and start all over (install xp -> 7 -> 10) which probably wouldn't be a bad idea since my windows partition is nearly full with clutter, even though I've moved everything I could to a different drive.

I should mention that the final straw was when I found out "linked" programs were broken.

I have an animation software and a 3d modeling software which have a bridge between the two. You are supposed to be able to take a 3d object and send it back and forth between the modeling soft and the animation soft. Well this wasn't working as the programs would say they couldn't "find" each other (even after re-installs). I chalked it up to the modeling software being very old and hasn't been updated since XP so I figured it was simply a compatibility issue.

well the other day I went to write a quick script in AutoIt and I kept getting a message in Scite saying it couldn't determine the location of AutoIt even after a complete re-install of both.

Soooo, there's something screwed up in my Win10 that is keeping these programs from "talking" to each other and it's time to fix things.

I find with 10 it works when you do a clean install or upgrade from a clean install, but it always has problems when you have a used system

I wonder if I can install xp -> 7 -> 10 without activating windows/entering the product keys in between and just use the key that the jellybean keyfinder gives me after 10 is installed

Actually, from what I just read I can do a clean install because the key you pull from the OS is just a generic key. The actual key is a "fingerprint" MS pulls from your system when you upgrade which is good for either upgrade or clean install.

I'll try the clean install first (after a get a DVD to put the iso onto) and if for some reason that doesn't work, I can go from there.

That's good to know if, for some reason, the clean install of 10 doesn't work.

I've got to really go in and do some maintenance on my files soon as well. (remove duplicate copies of files, put stuff in correct folders, delete old install exe's I don't need anymore, etc.) as things have gotten quite the mess.

You know, just copy your entire downloads or documents folder to a new drive for backup going "I'll go through the files later" and later never comes :o

Then I need to remove any restrictions on my copied user folders so I can access them after the reinstall since those darn permissions are persistent and carry over with the copy.

Ahh, thank you again :)

I've never used robocopy and thought that it was just for cloning entire hard drives.

I will definitely get that and use it then as it sounds like it will make this a whole lot easier :)
