Reading telnet

Hi all,

I'm in a middle of a large project and trying for a long time to read the output of a telnet server (old unix server).

I'm connecting to the telnet via cmd interface using the command " telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ".

I'm able to send commands to the window using "Send" command, but couldn't read the output the server gives me for each command I send.

The problem is that I have to know what the server returned in a reply to my command, in order to know what to do next.

Tried to use the "StdoutRead" function but it doesn't work well with telnet cmd window (worked fine with a regular cmd window).

If something is not understood please ask and if not in the correct forum please let me know.

Would much appreciate your help.

Hi Chimp,

I tried to use your script for telnet console as you posted and had some trouble as "dbs179" had and posted here:

Had trouble when running telnet, so tried working with cmd first.

I was able to get the stdout when first running cmd, but after trying to send some text, couldn't receive any more output and can't know if the stdinwrite worked.

Any suggestions?

Hi hkm4444

...? not clear to me what you tried so far.

could you please try this first steps:

1) download console telnet from here:
http://consoletelnet.sourceforge.net/#download
Download the binary only distribution version 2.0
http://consoletelnet.sourceforge.net/download/telnet-2.0_static.zip

2) create a directory where you save (later on) your AutoIt script (say TelnetTest)
3) within the above directory (from point 2)  create another subdirectory  (say Telnet)
4) unzip all content of the zip file downloaded at point 1 into this last directory created at point 3
5) now you should have a path like this  ...\TelnetTest\Telnet containing all the "Console Telnet" uncompressed files from the telnet-2.0_static.zip

now please open a cmd prompt, set the path to ...\TelnetTest\Telnet  and run the Telnet.exe issuing this command  .\Telnet.exe

you should get the "Telnet Console" prompt, Something like this:

Telnet Win32 v2.0, Copyright (C) 1999 Paul Brannan <pbranna@clemson.edu> and
the team.  This program comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details read
LICENSE.TXT.  This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions.

Loading configuration options from ... \telnetTest\telnet\telnet.ini
.
Loading ANSI from ... \telnetTest\telnet\keys.cfg.
Use configuration: ANSI.
        keymap ansi
There are 1 maps.

telnet>

now try to connect "manually" to your telnet device with a command like open 192.168.0.10 (using your correct ip) and tell if your interactive session was ok.
