Changing strings in another program

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I have a specific program with a task that is too mundane and repetitive for a human to do. So I want to ask the pro users of this tool if this can be done with autoit.

The program is Warcraft 3's editor for making maps. When you import icons into that program, you have to manually replace the strings of the icon path with one of three possible icon paths, depending on the icon (active, passive, disabled). This process requires you to double-click an imported icon, check a box and replace part of the string. Its not a problem for a couple of icons, but when you upload more you will really see how seriously repetitive it is.

This is simply a job for a script to check the icon and replace a string. But this requires the script to "use" this program and go through the list of imported resources in order to replace each of them.

Can anyone tell me if this is possible to do with AutoIt? Thank you!

berrybush,

Welcome to the AutoIt forums.

That looks perfectly "doable" with AutoIt - and as the script deals solely with the game editor I consider it is entirely legal. However, I would ask that you read the Forum rules carefully before you post again as it would be a pity if you strayed into banned subjects with future questions.

That is great to know thanks. Can you provide some tutorials for me regarding this subject?

So I will get banned for asking this question> That seems little too much. After all I own the game and its editor legitimately and in no way I want autoscript to change the game, just to help me with something that I consider should be in the editor but its not.

"Launching, automation or script interaction with games or game servers, regardless of the game."
As soon as you try to automate the game itself you will be in trouble.
This discussion has been held so many times that a strict policy was implemented. It has the big advantage that there is no gray area and users know in advance where the border is.

There are a lot of different functions you would need: Win* functions to interact with the window, Ctrl* functions to interact with controls to select an item, input data etc. If you tell us what you want to do first then we can tell you how to start.
Do you want to launch the editor with the AutoIt script?
