Which programming language deserves to be learned?

Good evening everyone :)

I'm writing here, hoping that this is the right place where talk about these things. While I'm try to create a program which manages a lot of things about Suppliers, Customers, BOM, and so on ( I'm doing it with AutoIt ), I was thinking about'l: Which programming language deserves to be learned? Which is a powerful and solid programming language, which allows you to do almost everything, and, in the same time, is almost user-friendly?

VB.NET? VB? C#?

Thanks for everyone who will answer :)

I'm really struggling with this little project of mine with AutoIt, 'cause I realize that I'm a noobie, and manage all those things, makes me sad.

Best Regards.

I really am partial to C#, but VB.NET or any good .NET language is great, such as Python. Actually, I adore Python because it's so easy to write so much with so few lines, but being an indentation based language, i still prefer C# overall regarding .NET languages

Hey, @Earthshine! :)

Happy to see your comment here :)

When I was at school, I used to program with C and C++, but I've never went too much in touch with GUIs and others stuffs which I used with AutoIt or VB.NET.

I like VB.NET because it's a powerful language, and nowdays, a lot of things have been done with VB.NET I guess; so, it is a powerful language, but I don't know if it is what I am looking for.

What about Pyton instead?

Does it a good and powerful language which allows you to do a lot of stuffs? Simplier or not than VB.NET?

C#, at least what I l've seen on the Internet, seems to be very "mechanic", as C and C++ are ( always for me ).

I like more If... EndIf instead of {} structures :D

Thanks very a lot :)

I really need some effort in this period.

Best Regards.

VB.NET is just as powerful as Python or C# or any other Object oriented and multi-threaded languages. If you use that and like it, stick with it by all means! I lust love how quickly I could put tests together in python and stuff like that. there is a ton of support for all these languages out there . They made .NET so you could use what you like!

Python you may really enjoy if you don't like braces. Yes, it is really a powerful language with TONS of built in functionality, but, you can always find a package to use if you don't already have one because of the level of community support.

Please note that C[++] {} construct delimits a scope and has no relationship with if, while, switch ...

The language you want to learn depends on your ambition and (professional) goal.

Learn them all is the easiest advice but depends on your knowledge, mindset.

Learn to write a compiler and after that you probably understand easily all kinds of programming languages and how they can be mixed.

For all languages its not the language itself but the libraries/frameworks around it you should be able to catch up.

For every language it will take you a 1-3 months to be familiar with the IDE, tools, libraries around it and probably much longer before you understand full frameworks.

The nice part I feel from .NET that its nicely documented by microsoft with examples for the more open oriented languages stackoverflow is your friend

Sorry @Earthshine, but in Italian, I couldn't find a good meaning of "braces". What do you mean about that?

By the way, Python could interest me, because of its "easy" way to test your code, as it is in AutoIt :)

@junkew

My ambition and goal of a programming language which I'd learn, is its reliability, its "programmer-friendly" environment, and its powerfulness, which depends too from how it is used.

For example, if I would like to make an application, which has to manage a lot of data, centered in an SQL Server, with a tons of clients, which would be the best programming language to do this? :)

I agree with you when you say:

It is true nowdays more than some time ago.

If you don't know how to program with Node.js, companies delete your curriculum first than another person who knows how to use Node.js.

So, yeah... The ability to learn and know how to use a "library", framework, or whatever it is called, it's a big part of the reliability of the programming language, and the environment itself.

@jchd

I talked in my ignorance of a 22 yo guy :)

I was meaning, that I prefer to see instructions like If...EndIf, instead of parenthesys, which are used, in C, C++, C#, and so on, to define a block of instructions... A definition of a class, struct, an If...Else...EndIf statement...

I wanted ti make this "example" because we were talking about "two" main programming languages which VB.NET and C# are, where, to declare a variable, in one you use

Dim strHeyJchd As String

And, in the other one, you use

string strHeyJchd;

Just to say that there are several and evident differences between the two languages we were talking about.

A little "basic" example to explain why I did say that :)

By the way, it's a bit late now :)

So, for everyone who is interested to let me know which is his favourite programming language, and would like to explain me why, here he's welcome! :)

I will never be tired to say that I'm here to learn as much as I can, because I love programming, and I love this strong community which you guys are :)

Thank you! :ILA2:

Best Regards.

    • I work in payments in large financial institution COBOL is my favorite which can be in color workspace IDE really nice
    • I work with business people Excel/VBA is my favorite
    • I work with systemadminisators the CMD batch, VBScript or Powershell is my favorite
    • I work with WSDL SoapUI GroovyScript is my favorite
    • I work with HTML JavaScript is my favorite
    • I work with IBM ECM Content Foundation-FileNET API´s I use C# or Java
    • I work with automating GUI's AutoIt, HP UFT/LeanFT I use
    • I work with Microsoft TFS on CI/CD I learn many API's to deal with (Jenkins, Git, Maven, Nexus)
    • I work with mobile devices you have to focus on either iphone or android language
    • ....
  • Basically about every 10-15 years a major shift on what the younger people preferr as a language for building applications

The list can be endless certainly in DEVOPS team(s) you learn (at least high level) all these languages and mess up with how to comment/uncomment lines, line ends with semicolon yes, no concatenate with a plus or an ampersand etc.

Good morning @junkew:)
Wow! What a long list of favourites programming languages :)

I'm not so expert to know the 50% percent of these programming language, but I used:

  • C ( for Arduino and not );
  •  VBA for what I do for work ( SCADA programmer );
  •  Batches always for work applications;
  •  JavaScript a little bit when I was at school;
  • AutoIt, for a lot of stuffs, and, actually, for a project of mine which is a Management, and I don't know if AutoIt is the best programming language to do this thing with.
And now, just because I know that AutoIt is not as much reliable as a VB.NET ( and others ) could be, I'd like to learn a language which offers a lot, in almost everything about database management, GUIs, and so on...
Thanks a lot for your reply :)
Have a good day :)

Best Regards.

For my information, in what respect is AutoIt "less reliable" than VB.NET and why do you feel AutoIt isn't suitable for DB management or GUI design/handling?

there is nothing C# or other .NET languages can do that VB.NET can't, but if you focus on the big money makers, you could move about in your career, hopefully upward and forward to something you love even more. (I love that in C# I can write less code and do more though, and since I was a C guy for 15 yrs or so, I just love C++ and C# and .NET stuff because of the access to the HUGE libraries out there)

oh and by braces I meant the curly ones: { }

Hey @jchd:)
I feel that a lot of things are more simply to do on a Visual Studio with VB.NET, instead of doing them in AU3 :)
The first thing that comes on my mind, and the one which is still a bit misunderstood, is the "Events Management".
In Visual Studio ( with VB.NET ), If I want to manage the event "Double Click", I just need to go to the Events tab, and write the instruction you want to execute :)
In AutoIt, you have to do a lot of passages to do a "simple" task like this, and I am sure that there are a lots.

With this, I am not saying that AutoIt is not reliable to make a DB Management and GUIs ( I am doing just right this in my project! :D ), but that AutoIt is not so "direct" as it is VB.NET or others, which may offer a more reliable environment of development :)

Keep in mind, that I am saying those things, basing on my personal Very very little experience which I've had and I'm having with AutoIt and VB.NET :)
I won't ever permit to say that this "feeling" is Universal... Just mine :)

@Earthshine
Thanks for the reply :)

Let's say that this is what I am looking for right now :)
A solid, powerful, and reliable language to possibily involves in a big "money maker" project :)

Best Regards.

I feel that way too. Less code, more work done faster with .NET for most of what I do now.

also because .NET is Object Oriented and Multithreaded

I know C# programmers can make VERY nice livings (six figures), not sure about the perception of VB.NET, even though it is just as powerful and reliable, still, with what you have now, you should do well. Python pays very well from all of my research on the web as well, and, I found out why so many others love it due to that fact, even though I am not pursuing any advancements.

For me, the language you use depends on the purpose :

To simplify, and in my opinion :

  • Programming basics, learning computers : C (no C++ !!!) is a must ! But not for general applications
  • GUI, Database, either simple or complexe : I never found better than AutoIt (.NET is too much for me)
  • Newcomer : GoLang (ABSOLUTLY GREAT ! If it had native GUI support, I would not in this forum anymore :P )
