Autoit and Databases - A Journey of Avoidance

Recommended Posts

I'd like to select a single database to use with AutoIT.  I know MySQL has been discussed in here and this morning I saw a reference to PostgreSQL.  My go to database, when I've needed one, has been MS Access because I already had it and didn't have to learn something new.   I'd planned on converting a small AutoIT TV Show and Episode app, that uses delimited text and a couple of AutoIT GUI's, to MS Access a few years ago but never got around to it.  Now I have to.

Also have been working as a volunteer on a volunteer and donor database project for a struggling non-profit in the mid-west that's been using MS Excel for all of it's database needs.  I've been working for the past 6 months (on and off) cleaning up multiple excel workbooks and developing some VBA code in Excel to do some online data verification that they've been doing manually. I'm about ready to move that data into MS Access as well so I can start working on the Forms and VBA coding. However, I've gotten (with help from Koda) faster and more comfortable with developing AutoIT forms so I'd rather develop the user interface in AutoIT and skip MS Access altogether. Plus I absolutely hate MS Ribbons and XML.

I just want something that will work/integrate reasonably well with AutoIT.  At this time, other than MySQL and PostgreSQL I have no idea what other databases have been used or tested with AutoIT and which ones developers are actually interacting with using AutoIT.  A list would be nice if one is available somewhere. I've done some searches but haven't found one. Unless there is an obvious benefit for doing so I'd rather stay away from anything related to Access.

Thanks

Bill

There is 2 options: single user or multi-user.
Single user can use SQLite.
Multi-user may get tricky. You can use SQLite but you'd have to write a TCP/IP interface, meaning, you create a SQL to TCP API, to handle the concurrent requests or use another database engine. MySQL is free for any OS, and if you make an HTTP/HTML interface ( call it UI or web page ) later on, and the DB remains the same.
I personally use SQLite all I can. ( my 2 cents )

Did you already take a look at SQLite?

There is an UDF included in the full version of AutoIt :)

Francesco - No I hadn't but will look into it.  Anything that's already been tested, adopted, and/or "built-in" to AutoIT seems like a logical place to start. Thank you for the suggestion.

For the TV Show and Episode project I'm going to stick with single-user.  That's my own personal hobby project but even if I ever get it to the point of giving it out as a freebie that project is more of a single-user app.

For the non-profit project, I'm not sure yet.  I know I'm going to start it out as a single-user but the person that takes over from me eventually has an interest in building a client side android app and porting the database to amazons servers.  The guy that roped me into this has worked in IT as a database guru on everything from mainframe down to SQL server databases and is focused a lot right now on MS-SQL.  However, he doesn't have much in the way of single-user application development skills which is where I come in.  So I'm developing something of a "let's just build something and see if they use it and if they do then we'll turn it it into a real project".  That's a ways down the road though.

Right now, this is more of a "help, our hairs on fire and we need something quick." kind of a project.

Looks like I'll be looking at SQLite.  Thank you for the feedback.

You're welcome :)

I am currently developing and piloting a single-user database app in AutoIt, and have chosen SQLite.

I know my customers may in future require multi-user access; to that end I have written a wrapper that removes all database access to a single function.
That way I can easily switch to MySQL for multi-user and/or server access by writing a single wrapper for MySQL without touching the main code.

I have The same with my ADO.au3 UDF.

I make a wrapper and now from few years, my programs runs on MSSQL nad PostgreSQL
