Calculations from a String

Recommended Posts

My plan is to add a sort of calculator to my script. I currently have a hotkey to bring up an input box, which is used to control other parts of the script. I hope to use this to enter the equations to be solved, instead of making GUI that is a clone of the calculator that comes with windows. But I cannot find any (easy) way to input the equation as a string, and then evaluate the string. I started working on a function to break the string apart into numbers and operators, which can then be solved more easily, but this is turning out to be harder than I thought it would be. Adding brackets and such will make it even more difficult.

If I have a string such as $input = "1.5*(9-6/2)" , is there any simple way to turn this into "9", or should I start working on breaking the input apart, and then solving it?

Thanks in advance for any help!
