clipboard variable question

i know you can save text entered into an autoit input box into a variable.

what about other programs input boxes? is it possible to make an autoit script that will run at the same time that another program is running, read the text from that programs window, or input box, and put that text into an autoit variable?

if possible, maybe a brief explanation, or example? thanks
