This can be done without messing with the kernel, and it's not that bad of a joke, i've done it manually to some here at work. alot of newer display drivers allow for rotation of the screen, and you should be able to do it programatically (assuming they have a video adapter and driver that support it). The change could be done by changing in the registry, and then refreshing, or by bringing up display settings and manually clicking through. The second option would be easier to code probably, but the first would look cleaner, although you could just turn the monitor off while using the display properties to update the settings.
