Sell Scripts written in au3?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

since I need money I sold an autoitscript on ebay. The ebay stuff closed the auction, reason: copyright violation. Aren't I allowed to sell the scripts I've written in autoit? I do not sell autoit itself, just the time I spent on coding, so maybe somebody knows whats wrong... thx...

You can sell AutoIT script's as long as you have not stolen them from others thoug :)

UDF:Crypter a file encrypt / decrypt tool with no need to remember a password again. Based on Caesar cipher using entire ASCII Table.Script's: PixelSearch Helper, quick and simple way to create a PixelSeach.Chatserver - simplified, not so complicated multi-socket server.AutoIT - Firewall, simple example on howto create a firewall with AutoIt.

You basicly give Ebay or whoever the AutoiT license link and tell them to read it..

However, if you have used someone else's UDF's you *might* have to obtain thier permission. Intellectual property laws can be vague and confusing. I would recomend you take a look at some of these links:

Wiki

Internet and Electronic Rights Issues

Intellectual Property Forum

This stuff can get complicated *VERY* quickly. For example: Code posted on this fourm. Who owns it? The original author or the website owner?

A little reading goes a long way. Post count means nothing.

Everything you have to do is give prove program is yours. At least I think so :).

Let's say I write a five line script that uses this UDF and then sell the compiled script. Now, I can (probably) prove that those five lines are mine however, there is no way that the UDF belongs to me. If I don't have explicit permission from the UDF author to sell his/her work, it's possible I may be sued by the UDF author. Now, if I were to sell a script I would at least contact any UDF author and notify them that I am using there work.

And copy of AutoIt EULA

As I understand it, the EULA only applies to the AutoIt software it's self, not any user created scripts.

IMHO, this is an interesting debate. Perhaps a seperate thread in chat would be worth while...?

How would they know if the UDF's and source was not yours anyways, either way would they care if you used someone elses UDF in your script. As far as I'm concerned published UDF's are in public domain with one exception being the person who wrote the script as the original author. unless they say this is liscenced under.. (whatever), or set distribution rules on the code (e.g. non commerical). which is pretty rare.

If you post your source... I say finders/keepers... just obfuscate, compile, and sell

I suspect that his problem has more to do with not changing the resources in AutoitSC.bin.

That is the info that they would read to determine whether the code is his or not.

If he right clicks his compiled script and takes a look at properties then it's probably quite apparent.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but doesn't XSkin say that somewhere in it? That would mean that you couldn't make your GUI's look "Ub34-1337" if you wanted to sell them?

Personally, i wouldn't buy anything with a GUI that was meant to be "Ub3|`-1337" (corrected it)

I am with Lar on this one, finders keepers.

Contact ebay, send them a link to the Auto IT license page, AND paraphrase the part where it states you can sell your scripts.

As for Snarg.. who gives a toss !!!

The entire idea of SHARING a UDF is to make AutoIT better.. if you are going to be so anal as to sue just because someone used the UDF which YOU CHOSE TO SHARE (cause lets face it, how else could it be gotten by another user, or be included in the AutoIT release?) then you should be smacked with a trout.

as for proving that the code is yours.. if i asked someone here to write a script which would send the message "hello world!" to the user, i am sure the code would be similar for everyone.

Man thanks for your replies, the guys from ebay have written an email. NOW I am confused. Simply the fact that I wrote: "I will send the program via email to you" justified the cancel. They could not check whether the software is genuine or sth like that.

Read my thread here and you would see that I don't really give a 'toss'. I do, however, think it is an interesting discussion. Also, just because it is posted on this forum does not nescassarialy mean it is yours to do with as you wish.
