and i was wondering if there would be a way to convert files of all types into hex, and then convert them out to binary and write them in to their orriginal files.

this would work by selectign files, their hex data would be stored in .hexf files and read into arrays or variables, then it would get the names of all the files in the order they where stored, and write them back out. king of like a compression program...

look at the FileOpen() options for the 2nd parameter.

StringToBinary and BinaryToString

StringToBinary converts the text to readable hex.

Seems you were close to answering your own question.

im sorry, but i am very tired right now, and confused as well, what do you mean fileread as second paramater? and what about fileopen? i tryed using fileopen in binary mode, then saving the files text into another file name of the same type and it became un usable////

ok i got this

FileOpen("marx.zip", 16)
$hex = FileRead("marx.zip")
FileWrite("hex.zip", Binary($hex))

that copys a file, but i want to know how to store the hex numbers, the actual hex code, in a file, as above.

Then obviously you aren't doing something right, but I guess we are only left to assume you were doing everything ok since you haven't provide any snippet of code to see what you might be doing wrong.

Global $sInFile = "File you want to read"
Global $sOutFile = "File you want to write to"
Global $hInFile, $hOutFile, $sInRead

$hInFile = FileOpen($sInFile, 16)
$sInRead = FileRead($hInFile)
FileClose($hInFile)

;Now with the above you have your binary file in a variable buffer.
;To manipulate that string (correctly as we have no idea what you are doing), you'll need to use something like:
;$sInRead = StringToBinary($sInRead)
;Now you'll have a hexed copy of the string to manipulate

;Now to write back to a file:
$hOutFile = FileOpen($sOutFile, 18)
;If you use the StringToBinary, now you'll have to convert BinaryToString
;If StringLeft($sInRead, 2) <> "0x" Then $sInRead = BinaryToString("0x" & $sInRead)
FileWrite($hOutFile, $sInRead)
FileClose($hOutFile)

ok here is what i was looking for

file to hex:

#include <string.au3>
$file = FileOpenDialog("select a file", @desktopdir, "JPG Files (*.JPG)")
$name = Stringright($file, 6)
$name = Stringtrimright($name, 4)
FileOpen($file, 16)
$hex = FileRead($file)
$hex = _StringToHex ($hex)
FileWrite($name&".hexf", $hex)oÝ÷ Ú±¶â殶sb6æ6ÇVFRfÇC·7G&æræS2fwC°¢b33c¶fÆRÒfÆT÷VäFÆörgV÷C·6VÆV7BfÆRgV÷C²ÂFW6·F÷F"ÂgV÷C´UbfÆW2¢æWbgV÷C²¢b33c·7G&ærÒfÆV÷Vâb33c¶fÆRÂb¢b33c·7G&æs"ÒfÆU&VBb33c¶fÆR¢b33c¶WÒôWFõ7G&ærb33c·7G&æs"¢b33c¶WBÒfÆU6fTFÆörgV÷Cµ6fR2gV÷C²ÂFW6·F÷F"ÂgV÷C´¥rfÆW2¢ä¥rgV÷C²¢b33c¶æÖRÒ7G&æw&vBb33c¶fÆRÂb¢b33c¶æÖRÒ7G&æwG&×&vBb33c¶æÖRÂB¤fÆUw&FRb33c¶WBfײgV÷C²æ§rgV÷C²Â&æ'b33c¶W

only problem is that the hexf file is bigger than the original file, i just need a way to maybe reduce the hex code in the hexf file so it is smaller than the original file. i know i could make a leeter or a character respersent a bit of numbers, but that would takes ages for every hex number combonation, so is there any way to shorten the hex, or make it smaller and take up less space?

#1

I'm saying this now for the 3rd time.

StringToBinary = _StringToHex basically

BinaryToString = _HexToString basically

It's like you can't even follow EXACT instructions.

#2

How in the world do you expect a file you just read to be smaller in Hex, when "Hex" is 2 characters for every 1 character in the file?

no you are not understanding.. lol stringtobinary will writee the exact file into a different format, this i know.

my point was i wanted exactly what it does, i wanted a hex compression program....

i know that you can store the files exact data to any file with stringtobinary or even binary(string) while writting the string to the file

.

i wanted to find a way to use hex to compress files...

i think it would be intresting to find a way....

Um, you're not understanding.

Func _MyStringToHex($sString)
    Return StringTrimLeft(StringToBinary($sString), 2)
EndFunc

Func _MyHexToString($sString)
    If StringLeft($sString, 2) <> "0x" Then $sString = "0x" & $sString
    Return BinaryToString($sString)
EndFunc

After opening the file in Binary mode, and to store the hexed text, you would $sHexed = _MyStringToHex(FileRead($hOpen)).

Manipulate $sHexed however you like.

To write the hexed code back to a file.

$hFile = FileOpen(..., 16)

FileWrite($hFile, _MyHexToString($sHexed))

etc...

The inherit problem here is that just by making it a ASCII version of hex, it' already 2 times as large (as smoke said, 2bytes per actual byte).

It might be interesting. but actual compression does this at the byte level right off.

I have actually tried somthing like this in the past. The advantage is the text compresses alot better than binary data and it was easier to use abstract methods of compression.

The end result however was something that was no better than standard zip compression with the added disadvantage of it taking a LONG time to compress.

im sorry that i am confused but stringtobinary does not give the hex of the file.. am i correct? it just makes it binary text correct?

so alternitivly i could do

$hex = _StringToHex binary($hex))

that is the same as stringtobinary correct?

ok so as you say 2 to 1 just doubles the size, so i guess hex is completley out of the question (unless someone can find a better use for it)

is there any way of reducing the files size one stringtobinary is preformed?

------------------------------------------------------

that is unless we could use

StringRegExpReplace

with the hex, in order to maybe reduce the file size to 1/4 by replacing different sets of numbers with single text characters

this would in turn make it 1/2 th esize of the original file. i have all weekend to expand on this and i plan to test all possibilitys.

but before hand, does anyone think it is posible to use StringRegExpReplace to reduce the file size to 1/4 its original size?

I guess you could have done a test since I took the time to write an example.

_StringToHex in the AutoIt functions is very very slow.

Global $sTH, $sHT, $sStr
$sStr = "abcde"
$sTH = _MyStringToHex($sStr)
MsgBox(64, "Hexed", $sTH)
$sHT = _MyHexToString($sTH)
MsgBox(64, "Hex to string", $sHT)

Func _MyStringToHex($sString)
    Return StringTrimLeft(StringToBinary($sString), 2)
EndFunc

Func _MyHexToString($sString)
    If StringLeft($sString, 2) <> "0x" Then $sString = "0x" & $sString
