Concurrent Visual Studio Installations

Recommended Posts

I am about to install VS v6 - VS 2008 on a machine.

Should I expect something horrendous?

Lar.

I have VS6, VS.NET 2003, VS 2008 Express running with no adverse effects. Of course the old rules still apply, install the oldest first.

The PCRE (Regular Expression) ToolKit for AutoIT - (Updated Oct 20, 2011 ver:3.0.1.13) - Please update your current version before filing any bug reports. The installer now includes both 32 and 64 bit versions. No change in version number.

I don't know about VS6, but all the .NET versions should run SxS with no troubles. I had VS2005 and VS2008 installed SxS with no issues at all. I also have no issues with VS2008 after removing VS2005. The only potential problem could be VS6 because it's older than Jesus. There won't even be any issues with loading projects. Opening the solution from Explorer actually invokes a stub program which in turn loads the correct version of Visual Studio for that project. Obviously VS6 uses different file extensions.

I expect no troubles.

Only problem I've ever had is when doing 2003, 2005 and 2008. If you install the full versions, they tend to install SQLServer, and somehow for me the defualt instance got really messed up at one point. I removed the SQl components and installed only the 2008 version and it worked fine after that. Just be sure you dont try to install it on a compressed drive...that was annoying...
