Type Cast a String as Array

Newbie question. Is there a way to type cast a string as an array? In PHP this looks like:

$str = "";

$str_ar = (array)$str;

If there is no way to type cast in AutoIt, is there a function to convert a string to an array?

I found StringSplit() but wasn't sure if this was the best option.

AutoIt is a typeless language. Dim $a_str_array[1]

Common sense plays a role in the basics of understanding AutoIt... If you're lacking in that, do us all a favor, and step away from the computer.
