Ok im sure you all know that in vista (ultimate only i believe) you can set a movie or a GIF as your background on your desktop.

i was wondering if there was any way to reproduce this affect using autoit (via a COM object, or some kind of GUI)

My sister had set up this dang bubbling desktop on my computer a while ago. The worst problem was that it ate up CPU. What if you had your background set up to a website that had a movie on it? Would that work for you? I've actually thought about that for a while now, having a desktop that didn't have the icons, but a graphic that you clicked on certain elements of the graphic to activate programs.

Ahh you dont understand, i am on vista, vista doesnt give you the option to set a web page as your background, but im only on home basic. hence why i was lookign for an alternative method (maybe via an COM object of some sort?)

Hi, I know your saying vista but..

In XP I enable Active Desktop, then I get the Control Handle of the active destop..

eg: $hGUI = ControlGetHandle("Program Manager", "", "[CLASS:Internet Explorer_Server;INSTANCE:1]")

Then I use MCISendString to play the video on the control ..

All done with autoit and no third party apps needed.

Can post a rough example if your intrested...

Cheers

Edit: Some strange side effects happen when doing the above method I mention.

If you do a print screen of the desktop while the video is playing and paste it into any program then the video keeps playing in the pasted clip..

If you save the pasted image and then open the image in any program then the video is now displaying in what ever you opened the image in ..

Even explorer shows a thumbnail with the video still playing.

This only happens when you keep the video playing on the desktop.

Sorta looks cool watching a thumbnail of the video..lmao.

@smashly

So you have discovered what all video players do? (when using the right output renderer)

Congrats ;)

@emoyasha

I think you will get much better results with a real videoplayer than with AutoIt, for example check VLC, with a little tinkering you can get it to run as a service with its own gui hidden so the only trace of it would be some cool video!

Here is a nice guide which shows how to do most of it.

WTF is that meant to mean?

No I discovered I can display video as a wallpaper on my desktop without using WMP or a third party player ....

Only third party software needed is AutoIt :D

  • 3 years later...

DreamScene sucks.

It has an issue with text being transparent and windows does not allow you to change it, so you end up having transparent desktop icons text and there is nothing i can do to fix this and i tried everything out there.

And you reopened a thread that has been dead for over 3 years to post information about a non-AutoIt app (or problem) because......??
