totally new to scripting

Recommended Posts

Hello-

I inherited the sys admin position at my company and have not learned scripting as of yet. The login script was changed by my former boss after I emailed it to him yesterday. He emailed it back to me today and I am not sure where it goes or if I need to do anything else with it (compiled, build)

I apologize for the simple question, but i am totally new to this and really need the help.

Is the script written in AutoIt or something else?

AutoIt scripts can be wrapped into and executed in EXE form, but you need to learn how to use the wrapper. Easy way is to download Scite from http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/downloads.shtml

Or you can use autoit3.exe <file.au3>

Start there and let us know where to need help beyond that. There are also some great tutorials out there to help get you started with AutoIt

Spectra,

First, welcome to the AutoIt forums.

I would suggest that you read the Help file (at least the first few sections - Using AutoIt, Tutorials and the first couple of References) in pretty quick time - this will help you enormously. You should also look at the excellent tutorials that you will find here and here. Once you have a basic grasp of what scripting/programming is all about, things will seem a lot clearer than they do now. Once you know enough to ask proper questions, using the Search facility is also a good tip - as there is a pretty good chance your question, or something like it, has been asked before. Look for the "Search" button to the right in the title bar.

Your current question is almost impossible to answer, as we have even less knowledge of your system than you! :-)

However, a couple of things which might help:

- Where did you get the original script which has since been amended?

- Is there any reference in the script to something which runs in your system - such as a similar name to the current log-in process on your system?

- Is Autoit installed on the system:

-- Does AutoIt3.exe exist?

-- Is there a .au3 file which has similar code to the script on the system?

If you can give answers to these questions, there is a chance you might get a half-decent answer.

But seriously, I would ask your new boss for a few days free to start to get to grips with AutoIt if it forms a serious part of your system - otherwise he might not have a useable system before too long!
