Decompiling FAQ

Jon: Removed protection from "Decompiling FAQ"

Below are frequently asked questions about decompiling AutoIt scripts.

__TOC__

== Is there a decompiler available? ==
Yes, sort of. The official decompiler will only decompile scripts compiled with AutoIt v3.2.5.1 and earlier. Any script compiled with a version later than that will not decompile.

== Where can I find the decompiler? ==
The decompiler is located at ''C:\Program Files\AutoIt3\Extras\Exe2Aut\Exe2Aut.exe'' by default. The directory may be different if you performed a custom installation. The developers may remove the decompiler from the installation package at any time without prior notice.

== What if I need to decompile a script compiled with a newer version of AutoIt? ==
You are mostly out of luck. Take the opportunity to learn how to properly back up your important files. The developers can decompile scripts but you must be prepared to prove you own the script. This is not done very often and the developers reserve the right to say no for any reason.

== Is there a 3rd-party decompiler? ==
Yes. There is software in existence which can decompile all versions of AutoIt. This software is in direct violation of the AutoIt license agreement. Creation or '''use''' of such software may be a violation of the law depending on your local laws. Do not use it.

== What happens if I use the 3rd-party decompiler? ==
If you mention you have used a 3rd-party decompiler you will be permanently blocked from the forum and issue tracker. You may be blocked for any of the following:
* Admitting you have decompiled your own script with a 3rd-party decompiler.
* Admitting you have decompiled another user's script with a 3rd-party decompiler.
* Posting any script that has been decompiled by a 3rd-party decompiler.
This includes decompiling scripts users have posted in binary-only form. Under no circumstances are scripts to be decompiled unless the author grants their explicit permission and the script can be decompiled with the official decompiler.

== Are my compiled scripts safe? ==
No. Any unscrupulous user may decompile your compiled script. You may use a program like [http://www.autoitscript.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=43853 Obfuscator] to make the source code harder to read. However, there is nothing you can do to stop decompilation. A determined user will get your source code if they truly want it.

== I designed a counter-measure to break the 3rd-party decompiler, may I share it? ==
No. It is theoretically possible to modify compiled scripts in a way that it still works but a decompiler fails to extract the source. However, tools that are capable of doing this violate the reverse engineering clause of the AutoIt license (the very same clause the 3rd-party decompiler violates).

== Where in the AutoIt license does it mention decompilation? ==
This clause:
:Reverse engineering. You may not reverse engineer or disassemble the SOFTWARE PRODUCT or compiled scripts that were created with the SOFTWARE PRODUCT.
That clause covers both reverse engineering how AutoIt works (in order to create a working decompiler or a counter-measure to decompiling) as well as decompilation of compiled scripts.

==Overview==
If you have been using AutoIt for any length of time you will know that it is a great and powerful scripting language. As with all powerful languages there comes a downside: virus creation by those with malicious intent. AutoIt has no viruses installed on your system, and if a script you have created has been marked as a virus (and you're not malicious) then this is a [http://www.pcguide.com/care/data/virus/scanFalse-c.html false positive]. The most common cause is an AntiVirus engine has found a set of instructions in an AutoIt EXE and deemed it malicious, took the general signature of the file, and has now flagged all (or most) AutoIt EXE's. This can be due to several reasons:

* Compiled AutoIt scripts can optionally be compressed with UPX. UPX is an open source software compression packer. It is used with many viruses (to make them smaller).
* A malicious scripter got the AutoIt script engine recognized as a virus.

There are more ways your executable could be marked; this topic covers only the most common causes.

==Reporting False Positives==
If you encounter a false positive, in which your script is erroneously recognized as a virus, please alert the offending AV company immediately so the matter can be resolved. Best practice would be to include your source code along with a compiled exe, allowing the AV company to independently verify your report. This process may take up to 24 hours depending on the AV company, but will be resolved much more quickly if you provide source code.

A good resource for reporting false positives can be found at: [http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-report-malware-or-false-positives-multiple-antivirus-vendors.htm How to Report Malware or False Positives to Multiple Antivirus Vendors]. There are also some links below to help.

Now I am sure you are wanting to know what you can do to get back up and running without being recognized as a virus. You have to send in a report to the offending AV company alerting them to the false positive they have made. It never hurts to send in your source code along with a compiled exe, to help them realize their mistake. You may have to wait up to 24 hours for them to release an update.

If you have been using AutoIt for any length of time you will know that it is a great, and powerful scripting language. As with all powerful languages there comes a downside. Virus creation by those that are malicious. AutoIt has no virii installed on your system, and if a script you have created has been marked as a virus, (and you're not malicious) then this is a [http://www.pcguide.com/care/data/virus/scanFalse-c.html false positive]. They found a set of instructions in an AutoIt EXE out there somewhere, took the general signature of the file, and now all AutoIt EXE's are marked (or most of them). This can be due to several reasons.

* AutoIt is packed with UPX. UPX is an open source software compression packer. It is used with many virii (to make them smaller).
* Malicious scripter got the AutoIt script engine recognized as a virus.

=Introduction=

AutoIt v3 is a freeware BASIC-like scripting language designed for automating the Windows GUI and general scripting. It uses a combination of simulated keystrokes, mouse movement and window/control manipulation in order to automate tasks in a way not possible or reliable with other languages (e.g. VBScript and SendKeys). AutoIt is also very small, self-contained and will run on all versions of Windows out-of-the-box with no annoying "runtimes" required! <br /><br /> AutoIt was initially designed for PC "roll out" situations to reliably automate and configure thousands of PCs. Over time it has become a powerful language that supports complex expressions, user functions, loops and everything else that veteran scripters would expect.

Features:

* Easy to learn BASIC-like syntax
* Simulate keystrokes and mouse movements
* Manipulate windows and processes
* Interact with all standard windows controls
* Scripts can be compiled into standalone executables
* Create Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs)
* COM support
* Regular expressions
* Directly call external DLL and Windows API functions
* Scriptable RunAs functions
* Detailed helpfile and large community-based support forums
* Compatible with Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT4 / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / 2008
* Unicode and x64 support
* Digitally signed for peace of mind
* Works with Windows Vista's User Account Control (UAC)

AutoIt has been designed to be as small as possible and stand-alone with no external .dll files or registry entries required making it safe to use on Servers. Scripts can be compiled into stand-alone executables with '''Aut2Exe'''.

Also supplied is a combined COM and DLL version of AutoIt called AutoItX that allows you to add the unique features of AutoIt to your own favourite scripting or programming languages!

Best of all, AutoIt continues to be '''FREE''' - but if you want to support the time, money and effort spent on the project and web hosting then you may donate at the AutoIt [http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/ homepage].

=Features in Detail=

'''Basic-like Syntax and Rich Function Set'''

AutoIt has a BASIC-like syntax which means that most people who have ever written a script or used a high-level language should be able to pick it up easily.

Although it started life as a simple automation tool, AutoIt now has functions and features that allow it to be used as a general purpose scripting language (with awesome automation as well of course!). Language features include:

* The usual high-level elements for functions, loops and expression parsing
* A staggering amount of string handling functions '''and''' a Perl compatible regular expression engine (using the [http://www.pcre.org/ PCRE] library).
* COM support
* Call Win32 and third-party DLL APIs

'''Built-in Editor with Syntax Highlighting'''

AutoIt comes with a customised "lite" version of SciTe that makes editing scripts easy. Users can also [http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/scite/ download a complete version of SciTe] that includes additional tools to make things even easier.

'''Standalone and Small'''

AutoIt is a very small and standalone application with no reliance on massive runtimes like .NET or VB. All you need to run AutoIt scripts are the main AutoIt executable (AutoIt3.exe) and the script. Scripts can also be encoded into standalone executables with the built-in script compiler '''Aut2Exe'''.

'''International and 64-bit Support'''

AutoIt is fully Unicode aware and also includes x64 versions of all the main components! How many other free scripting languages can you say that about?

'''Key and Mouse Simulation'''

Much time has been spent optimizing the keystroke and mouse simulation functions to be as accurate as possible on all versions of Windows. All the mouse and keyboard routines are highly configurable both in terms of simulation "speed" and functionality.

'''Window Management'''

You can expect to move, hide, show, resize, activate, close and pretty much do what you want with windows. Windows can be referenced by title, text on the window, size, position, class and even internal Win32 API handles.

'''Controls'''

Directly get information on and interact with edit boxes, check boxes, list boxes, combos, buttons, status bars without the risk of keystrokes getting lost. Even work with controls in windows that aren't active!

'''Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs)'''

AutoIt v3 will also allow you to create some complex GUIs - just like those below!

<center>[[Image:gui_eg1.png|284px|GUI Example 1]] [[Image:gui_eg2.png|274px|GUI Example 2]]</center>

And much, much more...

'''Controls'''

Directly get information on and interact with edit boxes, check boxes, list boxes, combos, buttons, status bars without the risk of keystrokes getting lost. Even work with controls in windows that aren't active!

'''Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs)'''

AutoIt v3 will also allow you to create some complex GUIs - just like those below!

<center>[[Image:gui_eg1.png|284px|GUI Example 1]] [[Image:gui_eg2.png|274px|GUI Example 2]]</center>

And much, much more...

<nowiki>
Func GenTitle ()
Local $Title = "H" & 'e'

MsgBox(1, GenTitle (), $MsgBox)</nowiki>

This is our finished product above, it uses Functions, ByRef, etc...

----

'''Func GenTitle ()'''
This is a simple no parameter Function Line, you can rename GenTitle to anything, but you have to make sure the rest of the script is updated aswell.

'''Local $Title = "H" & 'e''''
This is a variable statement, I'm going to break it down a bit.
''Local''
This tells Autoit where the variable will work, if it's "Local" then it will only work within the function you called it in.

''$Title''
This is the actual Variable, The $ sign always has to be before the name of the variable.

''=''
This is the operator to show Autoit that the variable is going to hold the information to the right.

''"H"''
This is the first of the text that is going to go into the variable, the Quote marks are needed to show what you want to put into the variable, you may also have this to be 'H'.

''&''
This is another useful operator to tell Autoit that you want to join H and e together

''<nowiki>'e'</nowiki>''
This is another bit of text were putting in $Title, it shows the use of <nowiki>''</nowiki> instead of <nowiki>""</nowiki>

So as of now, we have a variable named $Title with the text He in it.

'''$Title &= "ll"'''
This is again using the variable $Title and were adding more text to it this time.

''&=''
This is a handy operator to join the text to the right into the variable. The variable will now hold Hell instead of He

'''$Title = $Title & "o"'''
This is another way to do the same thing as &=, all this is doing is finishing Hello

'''Return $Title'''
This will return Hello whenever it is called. If we were to put $Hello = GenTitle (), $Hello would contain Hello

'''EndFunc'''
This shows autoit that we are done our function, you always need to have a EndFunc to pair to a Func.

----

'''Func GenMsg (ByRef $msg)'''
This is a more complex Function statement, it contains a parameter ($msg) but it also uses ByRef.

''ByRef $msg''
ByRef is a way of bringing a variable into a statement, any changes you make to that variable stay even after the function is done. So if you were to have a variable that has a A in it and you were to ByRef it into a func that adds BC then end the function, your variable will contain ABC.

'''$msg &= "orld"'''
This simply adds orld to the variable you have given the function.

'''EndFunc'''
This shows autoit that we are done our function, you always need to have a EndFunc to pair to a Func.

----

'''Global $MsgBox = "W"'''

This is another declare variable statement, but it uses Global this time. Global will allow $MsgBox to be used throughout the script, in functions and all.

----

'''GenMsg($MsgBox)'''
This calls our previously made function GenMsg.
It will use the variable $MsgBox with a W in it so that the function will add orld and together makes World.

----

'''MsgBox(1, GenTitle (), $MsgBox)'''
Our first internal function! This will display a messagebox with Hello as the title (Since GenTitle() will return Hello) and $MsgBox will hold World (The ByRef added orld to the w that we declared.)

----

That's it for our advanced Hello World Script! Hopefully it helped you understand some Autoit concepts. If you see any errors in it, please edit them out or PM me on the forums to get them changed!
