DDE support?

Pardon the ignorance, this is my first foray into using COM. Anyway, I'm trying to send commands directly into mIRC, but apparently it only supports DDE. Before I start digging into options available, is it possible to use AutoIt to communicate via DDE? According to the help file, DDE is COM's predecessor - does the latter encapsulate the former?

On closer examination, looks like you can mess with it via COM as well, so... disregard.
