Manage external program

I wish someone would help me on this problem:

I want to add a menu to an external program, say Windows Notepad and for that I have found a simple way in the example that comes in Autoit with the function "_GUICtrlMenu_GetMenu" . The example creates a menu and their respective sub menu in notepad and then closes. It doesn't explains how to handle the menu created and that would be most interesting and useful because if you can't manage it, is useless. Very grateful if someone could show me how to do it. Thanks
