Interested in coding and a friend directed me here

Hey, I'm pretty interested in coding, and I want to overall have a better understanding of how things work. A friend of mine directed me here and told me this was a great place to start. What are some beginner projects that you recommend I start with? I made really small things, like a little thing that opens to options for firefox, and a little thing that opens all my download directories (I'm a torrent whore and keep every file type saved different places)

Also, if you are a total novice in programming, I'd suggest reading some generic programming books, books on algorithms, program design, etc.
