Change tag attribute?

I have the following tag within a web page:

<div inputName="stDate" dojoType="dropdowndatepicker" dateFormat="%m/%d/%Y" widgetId="startDateId"

date="10/20/2010"></div>

I need to change the date to a new value... how can I do this?
