You're right that there are many skins for most cats and that alternation in regexp can slow operation significantly. OTOH overall speed largely depends on the input size and content: in most use cases (specially within AutoIt) PCRE compilation time dominates run time on small and medium inputs. Then it also depends on the release used. PCRE has seen huge improvements lately which are not available to AutoIt users, at least until a new AutoIt release embeds the new PCRE library.
