Get Text from Custom Control

How would I go about getting the text from another programs (custom) controle? I know it is possible as I've seen other programs do just that however I'm at a loss as to how to do it! I tried googling along the terms of custom control and nothing intresting came up.

Would a WH_SYSMSGFILTER hook do the trick?

This sort of works but it logs keys pressed instead of keys received. I want to get the text from a controle not log all keys pressed.
