The single-hotkey thing was just because I had set the code to use CTRL+ALT if no modifiers were given - which just gave the impression that single keys didn't work. And you have to engage French to English filtering when reading JP's (admittedly very good) english. What he meant was the hotkey function was not returning an error code if it failed.
