Character count in inputbox/string or filename

Good day!

I was wondering if there is a command to count characters in a string or a file.

For example the user enters the word: MyDocument in a GUI input box. Then I need to count the number of characters in that word.

Or I need to count the characters in the resulting file that is created and Filemove it so that it has 8.3 format.

Only problem is that I dont know how to count the characters. Any help is appreciated.

Darn I'm blind, I thought I looked over everything wtih string in the helpfile but I missed this little gem. Thanks a lot for pointing this out for me =)
