Is there a way to format the text within a plain ol' message box (add hard returns, italics, and the like)?

Italics, not that I'm aware of unless you create a custom GUI to use in place of a message box (thus not a plain 'ol message box). As for the returns,

MsgBox(64,"Line returns","You can use @CR, @LF and @CRLF" &@LF &"in conjunction with an ampersand (&) to" &@CR &"concatenate the ""text"" parameter of" &@CRLF &"MsgBox()")

That is exactly what I was looking for (and also explains why it wasn't working using the "... with an ampersand (&) to {ENTER} concatenate ..." method.
