What are valid chars for XML tags/attributes?

I need to write a C function to return true or false if a character is a valid in an XML tag/attribute - i.e. the actual tag name itself.

Anyone know which chars _can't_ be used (or which can - whatever is the easiest)? Google turning up too many random hits.

Useless stuff like:

(Actually a tag name can also contain other unicode characters, but this is advanced stuff that will not be covered in this faq.)

Jon, you have to drill down in the link Jos gave you. It explains the syntax of a tag, has a Name link. You click it, it shows how a name must start (with a letter or the symbols _, then it shows that any NameChar may follow. So you click that link to see what makes up NameChar. NameChar is made up of letters, numbers, and the symbols .-_: as well as some other characters (all the characters are expressed in hex). So basically, a tag must start with an underscore, colon or a letter and the rest of the tag name may contain any character NameChar specifies. Same thing for attributes.
