unicode in regular expressions. How?

I have read that the latest versions have been compiled with ANSI regular expressions to reduce size. I really need to have unicode support for regular expressions, is there any way I can get a version with it?

I only need some basic functionality, like \w+ matching accents in words.

you could try escaping each character??
