SQLite - how does it work!

Just spent a bit of time trying to find out information about SQLite. Im no further forward (even after searching Google).

I've got a requirement to store a few simple databases as part of my script and thought that SQLite would do the job. But having run a few examples, I can't seem to find databases anywhere - which leads me to believe it's all done in memory.

Can anyone explain in simple terms how this is meant to work. Is there a way to use SQLite to create & manipulate a database ON DISK?
