Collect Text From Control?

How would I get some text from a "label" on another application. Say there was a word displayed as a static lable on an application and I wanted to collect that text and store it as a verable in my program, how could i do that?

Ok so now I have another problem, what i am tring to do is write an auto program update routine. Here is how it should work.

read an ini file and get the current version #, compair that against the running application.

If the versions match, do nothing, if they don't down the program and copy the new exe from a common location, then restart again.

the problem is my application that needs updating stays in the hidden in the tasktray. Where the ControlGetText can not see it? Any ideas how to get arround this with out bringing it out of the tasktray?
