Is there a udf for compressing/decompressing strings ?

Example,

$x = StringCompress("hello world")

$y = StringDecompress($x)

$x will contain the compressed string.

$y will contain "hello world".

I want to create a simple chat program for my school project. I was hoping that such a function will save bandwidth.

The strings will be too short for that to help. Compression has it's own overhead and is only effective on much larger data sets than "Hello world." With almost any compression algorithm, a string that short would be LONGER after compression than it started.

:D

Thanks mate but those were a bit ... err .... overkill for basic string compression

Ended up doing the basic "AAAAABBBBCCCCCEEEEE" into "5A4B5C5E"

yeah its retarded ... but hey .... it works....

Saved your links for future projs though

Thanks
