file watcher. operating system driven by interupts needed

I am watching a number of files. Speed it critcal with low cpu requirement. This gets either cpu intensive or slow.

Is there a way that autoit script can be in sleep mode, but gets woken when the operating system appends to a file?

This can be done in other lower level languages.
