Problems with Send

Here's the script code with which I'm having the problem:

$User_Name = "Joe Cool"
Send ("Hello " & $User_Name & ".", 1)oÝ÷ Ø¢g¬¢ëeG­+zYh&¢HßÛÞz÷§¶¸u«­¢+ØÀÌØíUÍÉ}9µôÅÕ½Ðí)½
½½°ÅÕ½Ðì(ÀÌØíQµÀôÅÕ½Ðí!±±¼ÅÕ½ÐìµÀìÀÌØíUÍÉ}9µµÀìÅÕ½Ðì¸ÅÕ½Ðì)M¹ ÀÌØíQµÀ°Ä¤oÝ÷ Ù©Ýjëh×6$User_Name = "Joe Cool"
$Temp = "Hello "
$Temp = $Temp & $User_Name
$Temp = $Temp & "."
Send ($Temp, 1)

I've searched the forums to no avail. The Send docs don't specify anything specific I should be doing. I don't think it's with Send, though. I think it might be the concatenation of the string method inserting CR/LF...... with the & ..... ? The docs don't have a section on string concatenation, so I'm up a tree.

Can anyone help?
