how exactly is this done? all the ones made by users always seem to contain a section from the author saying "i dont know what this does"

could someone provide an example please? im thinking of making my own

I really find that hard to believe. In fact it's nonsense. Out of the many thousands of examples in the forums and the examples in your include files supplied with AutoIt, how many functions actually have a note from the author saying they don't know what it does?

Have you looked up "functions" in the help? That is about as clear as it gets.
