I see that $TCS_VERTICAL will make the tabs appear on the left, but you have to turn your head to see the labels. How do I make tabs appear on the left hand side, while still having the labels be horizontal?

See what happens if you use $TSC_BOTTOM.Perhaps it would be easier to make your own tab control using tabs drawn with GDIPlus or a graphic control and child windows for each tabitem.
