Change system volume

There is no "Default media player". Every file format has its own program for opening. A media player often simply sets itself to open when you open any of the files that it supports.

Correct question would be: How do I get the default run action for .mp3?

You can change wave volume with SoundSetWaveVolume.

In Vista, Start|Default Programs

In XP, Start| Set Program Access and Defaults
