What is the point of SREs?

Recommended Posts

I was recently going through some source code and found statements being converted to an "SRE" format. I didn't know what this was, so I went to google and found a seven page document. After reading it, I found that an SRE is basically a differently formatted regex statement...

So my question is, why? Is there any real benefit to using SRE vs a regular regex?

  • S = String
  • R = Regular
  • E = Expression
Clear now? If not, drop the S and what do you have?
