Why does button change when mouse passes over?

I don't understand what's happening in this simple script (cut down from larger program). Simply passing the mouse over the button causes the button text to revert to an earlier version of the button text. I would expect button text to remain the latest written button text. Script shows this happening. Any pointers as to what's happening appreciated.

#include <GUIConstantsEx.au3>

GUICreate("Button Question", 500)

GUICtrlCreateLabel("Why does the button below revert back to a first version when the mouse just passes over it?", 10, 10)

$Button = GUICtrlCreateButton("<", 100, 100, 20, 20)    ;first version

$Button = GUICtrlCreateButton(ChrW(0x25C4), 100, 100, 20, 20)   ;second version
GUICtrlSetFont($Button, 10, 400, 0, "Arial")    ; will display 10pt, normal weight, Arial

GUISetState()      ;display dialog box with button

;run GUI until the dialog box is closed
While 1
    $msg = GUIGetMsg()
    Select
        Case $msg = $GUI_EVENT_CLOSE
            ExitLoop
    EndSelect
WEnd

Because you have 2 buttons on the screen, not 1. You never deleted the first button, you just created a new one with the same variable name tied to it, that doesn't affect the first button. Easy way to prove this, is change the location of the second button to somewhere else on the GUI, you'll see you have 2 buttons, and not 1.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.
