Recognising Pixle groups

I know you can recognise certian pixles colors in a picture, but how can you recognise images, or more presisly pixle combinations. and is there a guide for the colors values? like red would = 1234 and blue would = 2345. I know those arn't correct, so some help on that would be apricated. I'm working from the ground up, so I'm not really knowledgable on these types of things. thanks
