Wildcards in strings? Also shorthand expressions.

6 posts in this topic

Two questions, if anyone knows -

Is there a way to use wildcard characters when using string-based functions? For example, if I wanted to StringSplit a string not with a fixed delimiter but instead, for example '<block>arbitrary_changing_text_I_want_to_treat_as_part_of_the_delimiter</block>', would there be a built-in way to do so? Or if I wanted to do so with StringInStr or StringReplace?

Secondly, where can I find a list of, for lack of a better {known} term, shorthand expressions? Things like &=, &_, &+, _, etc? I've stumbled across them browsing UDFs, but trawling AutoIt help yielded nothing.

Hi, Quinch. For your second question, check the helpfile under Operators.

For your first, I believe the best route is going to be StringRegExp, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're looking for. StringRegExp is by no means easy to master, but it is a powerful tool for searching and comparing strings.

Ahh, regexes... I knew they'd catch up to me sooner or later. Thanks for the pointer, looking over the help now; it's a bit intimidating, but I'm starting simple so... can't be that hard, right?

Quinch,

can't be that hard, right?

RegExes make my brain bleed! :)

I recommend this site if you are serious about getting into SREs. Difficult to learn but well worth the effort of getting a working knowledge of how to use them. ;)

Keep that thought as long as possible :) There are a couple of good sites suggested by other members of this forum, linked below. There is also the PCRE Toolkit by GeoSoft.

Alright, a followup question in the wake of trying to grasp the basics - what flavor of regular expressions does AutoIt use?
