2 Questions Regarding SciTE Full

6 posts in this topic

Hi

I am curious to ask:

1) What is the difference between the SciTE that comes with the regular installation of AutoIt, and "SciTE Full"?

2) Assuming SciTE Full is better and gives more than the regular one, why isn't the full one simply included, insted of a weaker verision??

Thank you very much

1) What is the difference between the SciTE that comes with the regular installation of AutoIt, and "SciTE Full"?

The full version includes all of the configuration files and tools that make using SciTE with AutoIt much easier.

2) Assuming SciTE Full is better and gives more than the regular one, why isn't the full one simply included, insted of a weaker verision??

Download size, not everyone needs or wants all of the additional tools that are included in the full version, so you have the option to only download the tools you want, instead of all of them. There are links on the download page for SciTE on the AutoIt downloads page that link to the various tools and configuration files so you can customize the package to your needs. Edited by BrewManNH

Back up and restore Windows user files _Array.au3 - Modified array functions that include support for 2D arrays.  -  ColorChooser - An add-on for SciTE that pops up a color dialog so you can select and paste a color code into a script.  -  Customizable Splashscreen GUI w/Progress Bar - Create a custom "splash screen" GUI with a progress bar and custom label.  -  _FileGetProperty - Retrieve the properties of a file  -  SciTE Toolbar - A toolbar demo for use with the SciTE editor  -  GUIRegisterMsg demo - Demo script to show how to use the Windows messages to interact with controls and your GUI.  -   Latin Square password generator

What's special about the extra Configuration Files?

And why can't they simply be included with the regular version? What harm/complication can they do for regular users?

(it comes with defaults, so is there any problem?)

I ask this to understand if there can be any disadvantage for me, to use the Full verion of SciTE.

I think you're wasting too much time thinking about this, either use it or don't, if you need the tools that are in the full package download it and install it. If you don't, then don't. Seems simple enough.

As to the configuration files, download them, look at them to see what is different between the lite version and the full version and see if you need them. Do a little homework on your own and then you won't have to ask such simple questions. I always tell my kids when they have easily answered questions "Look it up", they learn more that way than asking questions before they've even tried to find an answer from someone else.

I think that this question is useful for all AutoIt users that have not switched to the Full version of SciTE.

The most natural question a person might ask himself, is What can it do more?

and another 1, "Is there any reason not to install it?" (maybe that's the reason it's not included in the regular download).

Configuration Files cannot always tell you the info clearly.

If anyone can write here 1-2 sentences about it, it will be helpful.

I already told you why it's not included in the standard download of AutoIt, it's because of the size of the download plus the fact that not everyone wants or needs all of the tools included. It's not going to make your computer blow up if you download it, it won't corrupt your OS, it won't cause AutoIt to stop working, it just adds functionality to the editor.

Configuration files can always tell you the information clearly, if you learn how to read what is in them yourself. It's not brain surgery, it's just a text file with specific meanings for each setting which is fairly clearly documented on the Scite website. If there are specific questions you have about the settings that you don't understand (after looking them up first), you can always ask about them. Asking for a blanket statement as to what all of the differences are, without even trying to look at it yourself first, is going to be hard for anyone to answer.
