String Comparisons

I'm working with OCR to validate text in an image. There is a lot of logic to add in specific text, and I'm trying to verify that the data is proper (Not really 100% matching, but to verify the logic put in the correct string)

In general, the OCR works well, but there are some characters which it's not able to discern. I can get around that with stringregexp replace any of those character with the grouping of possible characters.

snippet (non functional)

$sRegExp1 = "[,|?]" ; comma sometimes incorrectly read as ?
     $sReplaceChars1 = "[,|?]"
     $sRegExp2 = "[1|l||/|||)|(|i|I|:]" ; similar chars 1|iI:
     $sReplaceChars2 = "[1|l||/|||)|(|i|I|:]"
     $sOCRString = StringRegExpReplace ($sOCRString, $sRegExp1, $sReplaceChars1 & "?")
     $sOCRString = StringRegExpReplace ($sOCRString, $sRegExp2, $sReplaceChars2 & "?")

     $bContinue_WUn_VerifyExamAnnotations = StringRegExp ( $sExpectedString, $sOCRString, 0 )

Sometimes, the OCR removes random spacings, which is more difficult to handle...All I can think of is to add a s? between every character in $sOCRString.

Does anyone have a better idea...or possibly a known UDF the can return a % difference or % similarity of 2 strings?
