Need advice on using extended characters

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to place a box (aka, "white square", "ballot box", etc.) in a line of text that's written with a FileWrite statement.  So far, nothing has worked.  But I was able to place a bullet symbol (Alt+0149) directly in the text.  I've made other attempts with ChrW( ) and tried different fonts, like Tahoma and Verdana.

My general question is:  how can I place a hex character code (for example, 0x25a1) in a line of text?  And is there a special setting for the Unicode Characters?

Thanks in advance for any help.  I'm unsure which direction to look for a solution.

(BTW, for a selection of possible characters, go to this http://shapecatcher.com/  site and draw a square in the highlighted area.  It will display a dozen choices.)

P.S.  ... and, if you can, please move this to General Help, where I should have posted.  Thanks.

Just FileOpen your output file in some UTF mode. Not doing so would try a conversion from Unicode to ANSI, and fail for most characters.

Then FileWrite and ChrW(0x25a1) -i.e. white square- will do what you expect them to.

Moving the thread will need a moderator.

That worked.

Just FileOpen your output file in some UTF mode.

I used UTF-8, based on its "wide-spread use".  As it turned out, I had to change to the Large White Square (0x2b1c) to get the effect I wanted when using Tahoma.  It's a relief to know that I can now get to the huge cache of special characters with simple write operations.  While researching the UTF choices, I found this rather complete article on how ASCII/UTF8/UTF16 all fit in the big picture: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html

Thanks very much for your help.
