Prevent shutdown, execute script when power button is pressed.

2 posts in this topic

There are quite a few threads out there that *almost* address this problem, but none seem to work for what I am trying to do.

I have a UPS that will send a shutdown event to the PC's power button on the case and I need to safely shutdown and save the work on a sensitive application before the machine actually powers down. So I want to prevent Windows 7 from shutting down when the physical power button is pressed, and instead run some script code. I then intend to then force-shutdown the machine from that code.

The problem with simply handling WM_QUERYENDSESSION and _WinAPI_ShutdownBlockReasonCreate don't work because the AutoIT GUI window in which they are created is automatically closed (I think) before it can respond to WM_QUERYENDSESSION and cancel it.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Your UPS isn't physically pressing the power button on your computer is it? If it's not then why do you want to monitor whether it's pressed or not?

UPSs will send a shutdown command to the OS if there is software running on the computer that monitors for it. Otherwise, they'll stay on as long as possible and then simply shut off when the batteries die.

If I posted any code, assume that code was written using the latest release version unless stated otherwise. Also, if it doesn't work on XP I can't help with that because I don't have access to XP, and I'm not going to.
