Accurately get typing caret position

I know autoit has a WinGetCaretPos function, but it is rarely accurate and nearly never gives the right position. The ONLY program it actually works with that I can find is notepad. Specificly, I need to find the on-screen coords of the caret in microsoft word. Anyone have any ideas?

If you give an example (describe what you are trying to do and what actually happens) and upload a word document with the version of word you are using and some code you've tried you would get more help here.
