New to AutoIt

Recommended Posts

Hello I read the FAQ sticky, but it didn't have information I needed.  I was redirected to here from another forum.  What I need to know how to do is run and operate AutoIt.  There are a lot of programs- run script, compile script, autoit windows info, etc.  Which one do I run to get started?  I have a batch file containing:

start "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine\wallpaper32.exe"
timeout /t 60
taskkill /im "steam.exe"  /f

Kracov,

Welcome to the AutoIt forum.

Reading the Help file (at least the first few sections - Using AutoIt, Tutorials and the first couple of References) will help you enormously.  You should also look at this excellent tutorial and download the really useful book you can find at

If you have problems with the code you have written, do not hesitate to post and ask for help - that is why we are here.

You didn't really say what you're actually looking to do. Are you just looking to replicate what's happening in the batch file in AutoIt?

For just getting started with AutoIt, you first need to open something to start writing it. Notepad works, as does any other text editor, however it's recommended to use SciTE, which is on the downloads page and has had a lot of work put into it to support AutoIt: https://www.autoitscript.com/site/autoit-script-editor/downloads/

Beyond that, look through the AutoIt help file and tutorials to get started. What you'll want to look at are likely these functions:

It's not a tutorial for using AutoIt, but this is also a good page to read: https://www.autoitscript.com/wiki/Best_coding_practices

We ought not to misbehave, but we should look as though we could.

Nevermind.  I didn't realize that this program requires one to learn a lot of coding.  The tutorial book has way too much information for me to absorb.  I'm not a coder, mostly I get by with copy-pasting code.

All I am looking to do is run the batch file I provided, to automate it.  Isn't it possible with Task Scheduler?

Task Schedule is fairly robust and running bat and cmd files from it is pretty straight forward.

Coder or not (I'm not either but I stumble along well enough), AutoIt is easy to learn and the community here is welcoming and helpful. Try a few lines like what @mistersquirrle advised and see how you like it. Post it here and the community will help you improve it.
