Chnaging computer name

Recommended Posts

From my experience, changing the computer name requires a reboot. If this is not a problem in your case, I believe that you can find a way to do it efficiently via AutoIT. Try googling it to find some tricks to do it.

However I am sure that there is a utility out there that allows you to do it via command prompt and it does not require a reboot for that change (however I am not sure what is the trick here -- maybe WMI?).

Use google, I remember that in the past I had found it that way.

erebus is correct that it will require a reboot but also be aware that if the system is on a network then you WILL break the network.

I have a compiled beta script that includes the code for changing the computer name. Just decompile the exe and find the right code.

EDIT: If you want me to post the actual code foryou then you will be waiting until I find the time and inclination to pull that script out of my archives. I haven't worked on it in almost a year.

Question about decompiling code? Read the decompiling FAQ and don't bother posting the question in the forums.
