By the sound of it your files are already affected <_< . Do you even run windows update? You should not be scared to reinstall SP2.

Oh yeah, is it okay if I just installed Windows XP over the previous copy of mine? There's an 'upgrade' option when I insert the Windows XP cd.

You think that won't break anything? If you are given the option to upgrade its because the XP cd you have is a different version from what you already have installed....(ie Home -> Pro, OEM -> Retail)

I would attempt the repair option first. It should be on that first screen after you boot off the xp cd.

This should have been your order of operations:

1. Look in event viewer for related errors

2. Install all windows updates

3. Scan for viruses

4. Install SP2

5. Run an XP repair

6. Install XP over current (this will recreate registry / break add/remove programs)

Also, after you reinstall SP2, don't forget to change the number of maximum half open connections. SP2 limits you at 10 (mostly BitTorrent speed suffers). Run EvID4226Patch223d-en.zip and you can change the limit <_<
