I just modified @saunders code by assigning a variable to the input so you can reference it with GUICtrlRead($input) later in the script.

#include <GUIConstants.au3>

$gui = GUICreate('', 200, 200)
$input = GUICtrlCreateInput('I am an input', 10, 10, 150, 20)
GUISetState()

While 1
    $gm = GUIGetMsg()
    Switch $gm
        Case $GUI_EVENT_CLOSE
            ExitLoop
    EndSwitch
WEnd
